The Significance of Sedation Dentistry

The Significance of Sedation Dentistry

Posted .

To ensure you receive the oral health care treatments you need, there are times when sedation may be necessary. Through the use of sedation dentistry, an individual can be calmed, relaxed or even put to sleep so that oral health care procedures can be given while avoiding the pitfalls that may come from dental anxiety or any other issues associated with concerns that an individual may have during their treatments. Here are some common types of sedation:

– Gas Sedation: Through the use of gas sedation consisting of nitrous oxide and oxygen, more commonly known as laughing gas, an individual can be put into a state of relaxation so that oral health care treatments can be administered.

– Pill Sedation: Pill sedation, also known as oral sedation, is a form of sedation dentistry in which an individual ingests a pill to place them into a deep state of sedation. Dosages can be adjusted. However, it often takes an hour to fully kick in.

– Intravenous Sedation: Through the use of intravenous sedation, an individual can have the sedative directly injected into their bloodstream for a fast-acting procedure so that their oral health care treatments can be immediately given. Dosages can be adjusted.

– General Anesthesia: Through the use of general anesthesia, also known as deep sedation, anesthesia is applied to put a patient into a state of unconsciousness. Oftentimes with anesthesia, an individual will not wake up unless a counter medication is used or after the anesthesia wears off.
